Non NHS Services

FITNESS TO FLY REQUESTS

Our GPs are under no contractual obligation to provide you with a fitness to fly certificate or letter as these are not included in the NHS GMS (General Medical Services) contract. There can be a considerable amount of medico-legal implications to this, as doctors can only state what is documented in your medical record with your current health at the time. Doctors are unable to comment on future fitness (i.e. while you are on holiday) as the doctor cannot predict your health during this time and this poses medico-legal consequences.

Processing fitness to fly certificates can be complicated. Doctors do not have any knowledge in this area and need to undertake specific training and gain an understanding for the reasons the fit to fly certificate is required, especially for those patients with long-term chronic health conditions and patients who are pregnant.  Doctors need to hold professional indemnity to be able to undertake this form of work. Therefore, Oakley Medical Practice will not issue any fit to fly certificates / letters.

We apologise for any inconvenience this causes, but Oakley Medical Practice has a responsibility to maintain appropriate patient care.

Most airlines require the nature of your condition, how severe it is and if your condition is stable. They also like to know the medication you are taking and if you have any mobility problems.

Ultimately, airlines have medical advisors who make the final decision on whether you are fit to fly. You can find out more information by visiting the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s website: Health guidance for air travel | UK Civil Aviation Authority

If you need any further information, please contact the airline you are flying with or you can obtain information from a private travel clinic.

Fitness to participate in a sporting activity

Fitness to participate forms for patients is non NHS private work and is not within the General Medical Services contract held by the NHS. GPs are not specialised to undertake an assessment for all activities and a patient's health can alter at any time and may not be accurate.
Risk assessment - A patients condition can worsen suddenly and this makes it difficult to provide a thorough risk assessment for fitness.
Legal consequences - This poses legal consequences for GPs and if any harm occurs, they would be liable.
Ethical elements -  Patients have the responsibility for making their own decisions about their health and activities. GPs can offer patients a summary of the risks and benefits of a variety of activities, which allows a patient to make an informed decision
GPs can - offer a patient summary to inform the organisation of your current health, who can then carry out an assessment based on the nature of the activity. If your require further detail about a specific condition you have, it would be best to contact a specialist.
We like to maintain patient care and safety by making sure you receive the right medical advice and prevent unnecessary risks.
